Four things influence the cost of a print: My time, print time, material cost, & risk of failure/reprint.
The initial order price is just a generated estimate and will usually be adjusted. (usually lowered on large low res prints and raised on small high res). This is especially true with high temp materials, materials that require pre/postprocessing, complex geometry, thin walls, high resolution prints, multi-material prints, support structure and/or other challenges.
Equipment is only half the equation in overcoming these challenges and producing accurate and functional prints. Software is used to generate the machine code from a 3d design. This machine code tells the printer how to create your print. I’m much more hands on in this process than most, especially if your design needs to be printed on one of my more complicated machines.
I usually do a flat rate on design work after a free consultation. Same for 3d scanning.
